PCA&D’s Center for Creative Exploration and the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen Partner for Adult Arts and Fine Craft Weekend Experience

This spring, the Center for Creative Exploration at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) and the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen (PGC) have once again teamed up to offer the Make and Create Weekend Retreat (https://pcad.edu/product/makeandcreate/for adults. This weekend-long engagement runs April 15 and 16 with morning sessions occurring at PCA&D and afternoon sessions taking place at PGC with time in between for participants to explore Lancaster City’s lunch offerings.

Emily Edelstein, Interim Director, Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen:

“We are delighted to continue our collaborations with PCA&D, allowing students to experience art, craft and have the satisfaction of saying ‘I made this!’  We at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen look forward to a weekend of playing with metal and glass, helping students discover the joy of working with their hands and the power of the creative spirit. We are so happy to be part of the greater Lancaster community along with our friends at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design.”

Specific projects covered at PCA&D include:

  • Building a Collage Library – Handmade collage paper is oftentimes more interesting than store-bought, and definitely more cost-effective. In this workshop we will be making our own collage paper by painting, stamping, and drawing. We will also discuss how to pull images from easy-to-source materials as well as how to organize your collage library so you can easily find what you need.
  • Portrait Drawing – Gain a better understanding of the structure of the head through anatomy and technical application. Discover a keener eye for, and confidence in the rhythms, gesture, and light effect in a portrait drawing through lectures and practice in the studio with a live model.

Projects covered at the PA Guild include:

  • Metalsmithing Basics – Participants will transform sheet metal and wire into jewelry through forming, soldering with an acetylene torch, texturizing with metal stamps and planishing hammers, and stone-setting in this class.
  • Glassblowing – Participants will learn the art of Flameworking and how to make their own unique glass creations including a window ornament, shot glass, or bud vase in this fun class. Blowing, shaping, and color application will be done by the student.

The Make and Create Weekend Retreat will be the second iteration of this partnership between two of downtown Lancaster’s creative mainstays.

Natalie Lascek, Director Center for Creative Exploration, Pennsylvania College of Art & Design:

“We are very excited to be partnering once again with the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. Last year’s retreat was a real success. The range of studio workshops gives participants an opportunity to sample different creative experiences and they don’t have to bring anything but themselves. All materials are provided. The great part about the partnership is if you fall in love with one of the workshops, our organizations have the ability to help you continue on that path.”

All supplies are included in the cost of retreat. Registration can be found at pcad.edu/cce under “Workshops.”
