Located in the heart of Southern Lancaster County, Quarryville serves as both a historic borough and a community hub. Founded in 1791 and formally incorporated as Quarryville Borough in 1892, the town takes its name from the limestone quarries that helped shape its early development and economy.
The borough’s origins date back to 1775, when Martin Barr acquired several thousand acres of land, including what is now Quarryville. Originally known as Barr’s Quarries, the community was officially named Quarryville in 1837, and the first post office opened in 1849. The settlement grew alongside the limestone industry, with more than 12 quarries employing over 100 men by the mid-1800s. As the industry expanded, churches, hotels, and businesses followed, helping establish the community that exists today.
One of the borough’s oldest remaining landmarks is Barr’s Ark, affectionately known as “The Ark.” Built by Martin Barr in 1791 or 1792, it remains the longest-standing structure in Quarryville and a reminder of the borough’s rich history.
Today, Main Street centers around the roads intersecting and leading from West State Street, West Fourth Street, and East State Street. Businesses throughout the corridor continue to serve residents and visitors while contributing to the area’s economic vitality. Goods is a major anchor business and is completing renovations to expand its retail footprint. Dottie’s and Son’s Ice Cream has become a local staple, known for its cheesesteaks, while the relocation of Dollar General into the former Rite Aid building has expanded retail opportunities in the borough.
Additional businesses can be found throughout Towns Edge Shopping Center, anchored by Giant and home to several small businesses, including Pack N’ Ship. Along State Street, visitors will find businesses such as Dust in Time, The Fashion Exchange, Sam’s Pizza, Brides of Today, Solanco Glass and Mirror, J & B Hotel, Quarryville Family Restaurant, The Daily Grind, Bloomly Massage, and many others.
Quarryville’s location continues to be one of its greatest strengths. Situated at the intersection of two state highways and one U.S. route, the borough serves as a gateway to Southern Lancaster County. The recent connection to the Enola Low Grade Trail provides cyclists, walkers, and outdoor enthusiasts with direct access to local businesses and the downtown district. Community gathering spaces also play an important role in local life, including Huffnagle Park, which hosts a popular summer concert series that brings residents and visitors together throughout the season.
Supporting local businesses is a priority for the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, located just a short walk from Main Street. The Chamber connects businesses with networking and educational opportunities throughout the year and partners with organizations including SCORE, ASSETS, the Economic Development Company of Lancaster County, the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board, and the Quarryville Library.
Together, Quarryville’s history, local businesses, community partnerships, and growing recreational connections continue to strengthen its role as the center of Southern Lancaster County.
