Ephrata offers a downtown experience that blends historic character with a forward-looking vision. Its wide streetscape, attractive architecture and welcoming atmosphere distinguish it from many communities in Lancaster County. At the heart of its identity is the Ephrata Cloister, the historic site that marks the community’s origins and reflects its unique heritage.

Founded in 1732 by Conrad Beissel and his followers, the Ephrata Cloister became one of colonial America’s most distinctive religious communities. Known for innovation, craftsmanship, music and printing, it attracted settlers and artisans whose influence helped shape the Borough of Ephrata. Today, the Cloister remains a major cultural and tourism asset, drawing visitors who often continue their experience by shopping, dining and exploring downtown.

Ephrata has also developed a growing reputation as a recreation destination. The Warwick to Ephrata (WERT) Rail Trail connects directly to the central business district, bringing residents and visitors into downtown. The community is home to Pennsylvania’s first bike park of its kind, a public bike share program, the free-to-use Ephrata Unleashed Dog Park and the still in planning Mountain Springs Recreational Preserve. Together, these amenities create an active, community-centered environment that supports revitalization and investment.

Downtown Ephrata features a strong mix of locally owned businesses, professional services and financial institutions. Ephrata National Bank serves as an anchor institution, reinforcing confidence in the community’s economic future. The district also includes healthcare providers, attorneys, insurance agencies, tax professionals and numerous personal service businesses.

One of downtown’s defining characteristics is its diverse collection of Hispanic-owned restaurants and barbershops. These establishments bring unique flavors and cultural influences to the community, creating a vibrant scene that reflects Ephrata’s welcoming spirit and evolving identity.

Mainspring of Ephrata supports small businesses and entrepreneurs through façade improvement grants, a Revolving Loan Fund Program, access to the LERTA tax abatement program and a dedicated Business Recruitment & Retention Committee. The organization also facilitates the Downtown Ephrata Property & Business Owners’ Association, fostering collaboration and shared problem-solving among stakeholders.

Community traditions and events further strengthen downtown. For example, Mainspring’s popular First Saturday events bring themed activities, entertainment, shopping and family-friendly experiences to Main Street throughout the summer. Another cornerstone tradition is the annual Ephrata Fair, one of Pennsylvania’s largest street fairs, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors and provides tremendous exposure for local businesses.

Looking ahead, the planned Mountain Springs Recreational Preserve represents one of Ephrata’s most transformative opportunities. By linking outdoor recreation, conservation, the WERT Rail Trail and downtown, the project seeks to encourage visitors to explore local businesses and participate in community life. Combined with continued investment in small businesses, walkability and historic preservation, these efforts will strengthen Ephrata as a destination where natural beauty, historic charm and economic opportunity work hand in hand.
