At Ephrata Area School District (EASD), partnerships between schools, local employers, and community organizations are creating meaningful opportunities for students to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences.

At the center of this work is the EASD Life Ready Graduate (LRG) framework designed to prepare students to have a positive impact on an ever-changing world, beyond traditional content mastery and standardized assessments. Recognizing that the traditional model of education “was designed for another time,” EASD implements relevant, LRG student-centered learning experiences districtwide, from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

The Life Ready Graduate framework focuses on three core areas: acquiring knowledge, applying skills, and demonstrating dispositions. Students build academic foundations while also developing communication, collaboration, critical thinking, adaptability, resilience and much more. With input and collaboration from the community, these qualities are what employers consistently identify as essential in today’s workplace.

To bring these skills to life, EASD intentionally connects students with local businesses and industry professionals through a variety of learning experiences. Community members can participate in classroom career talks, mentorship opportunities, internships, apprenticeships, job-shadowing experiences, mock interviews, and industry field trips. Businesses also support students through advisory panels, guest demonstrations, real-world design challenges, and student competitions.

“The community connections made by our students, from kindergarten through senior year, are invaluable. Hearing from and learning about important and varied community assets and valued partners can be eye-opening for our students to obtain a more accurate view of what it is like in the real-world. It also helps foster an appreciation for what makes the Ephrata community and the larger Lancaster County area so special.”

One of the district’s most innovative approaches is its project-based Cornerstone learning experiences focused on real-world problems and community connections. These projects emphasize student voice, sustained inquiry, public presentation, and collaboration with community partners. Across every grade level, students engage in work that mirrors the collaboration and problem-solving expected in a professional place of employment.

The EASD Instructional Model further supports this vision by prioritizing flexible, student-centered environments, rigorous and transferable learning targets, and modern learning tools that empower students to take ownership of their learning.

The responsible use of artificial intelligence is something EASD also embraces among their students and staff. The district has developed an AI implementation plan focused on creating “a private, safe, and effective AI ecosystem to benefit EASD learning and instruction.” Customized AI tools now support teachers with lesson planning, curriculum alignment, and behavioral interventions, while student-facing tools at the high school provide tutoring, feedback, and personalized learning support.

For local businesses, the opportunity to engage with EASD is more than community service. By mentoring students, hosting interns, offering co-op experiences, or participating in classroom activities, employers help students better understand career pathways while strengthening the future workforce. These partnerships are helping students grow with the confidence, skills, and experiences needed to meet their full potential and thrive beyond graduation.

“Local businesses and community organizations hold the keys for deeper learning. We cannot provide the same levels in authenticity and relevance to course content alone; we are better when partnered with our community. Additionally, the chance for students to visit, job-shadow, or participate in an internship provides an even more realistic view of potential career options prior to graduation.”
