This month is all about celebrating women and the important contributions we make to the world.

As an entrepreneur, my day can be filled with endless client calls, creating training curriculum and so many tasks. But the days I can give to my community are the days when my soul is refreshed.
Being in my community, making a difference in the lives of other people is what truly brings change.

One of the ways in which change happens is when I volunteer with the Lancaster Chamber’s Youth Mentor program. That program brings me so much joy and satisfaction. Seeing the difference in the students from the beginning of the program to the end of the program is a constant reminder of the impact spending just a few hours a month can have on a generation. It’s that impact that keeps me going, keeps me pushing through the mundane tasks of my business.

Impact begins the moment you or I decide to become active in the world around us. Engaging with others brings fulfillment for us and the people we serve. It’s what gives life and purpose to the ordinary aspects of our lives. We as women are powerful when we embrace each other, serve our neighbors and build a better community.

I could list the places where I am making a difference (Vineyard Heritage Center, LITS, The Dream House of Harrisburg, LAEN-AB WA) but that would only be half of the story. The real story is the difference those places make on me. Serving them changes me. The people in the programs show me what it means to give and expect nothing in return. Having a conversation with the community I serve shows me that we are not that different. Circumstances are different but at the core, we are the same. That’s what happens when we are in the communities. We make a difference by just being, by just listening.

Our communities are stronger because we invest ourselves in them. Don’t allow your life to be defied by your job. Instead, allow your life to be defined by investing in you in your community.
