Investing in Your Community
The Chamber Blog, Women in Business

Lancaster County has an incredibly strong and supportive professional community. There are so many opportunities to connect and get involved, and it’s one of the things I appreciate most about building my career here. When I first started my career in Lancaster, one piece of advice stuck with me: be consistent in showing up. It sounds simple, but consistently showing up to community events and professional gatherings has been a very valuable investment I’ve made in my career.

Early on, I began attending Lancaster Chamber events, especially through the Women in Business community. What I quickly discovered is that networking isn’t about perfect elevator pitches or collecting business cards; it’s about building genuine relationships and being curious about the people around you.

One of the things I love most about attending events is the opportunity to learn about others and hear their stories of the challenges and opportunities that have shaped them personally and professionally. There is so much we can learn from each other, and I believe when you approach networking with curiosity instead of pressure, conversations become more meaningful.

Getting involved also changes the way you see the business community around you. Before attending events, many company names were just that – names or logos. When you meet the people behind those businesses, it changes things. You start to associate brands with real individuals who have families, goals, and challenges of their own.

Another valuable part of networking is the opportunity to connect with professionals at different stages of their careers. It’s helpful to build relationships with peers navigating similar experiences, but it’s equally valuable to learn from those who have walked the path ahead of you or those who are newer with fresh perspectives.

This spirit of involvement is something I also see reflected in my workplace. Our founder, Conrad Siegel, believed deeply in participating in the community. Networking, volunteering, and staying engaged in local organizations were at the root of his mission, and that philosophy continues today. Our firm actively encourages employees to attend community events and volunteer; we are provided with the resources to do so because we believe being involved strengthens both individuals and the broader community.

As a finance professional, I must point out the similarity between networking and investing – a strong investment portfolio doesn’t happen overnight; it grows through steady, consistent contributions over time. The same is true for relationships and community involvement. Stay consistent with how you show up because when you invest time in understanding your community, your impact will go far beyond the product you sell or service you provide.
