July 2019 YPN Spotlight: Lindsey Cook

Title: Attorney

Company: Barley Snyder

Job Responsibilities: I represent individuals and businesses in all stages of litigation, from pre-suit positioning and negotiations, through trial and appeal.

Resources: (favorite app, book, magazine, article reference, blog, twitter follower, etc…): My best resources are my coworkers. The law is constantly evolving, so our firm works together to keep each other apprised of all changes affecting our clients. On a more personal level, I enjoy blogs such and Law21 and Legal Evolution, which focus on the future the legal profession, law firm management, and new innovations in the field.

Latest Nugget of Knowledge: “How people treat you says more about who they are than who you are.”

As a young professional, what has been the most valuable part of getting involved with the Lancaster Chamber and YPN?

I grew up in Lancaster, but after high school moved away. When I returned about three years ago, I knew I needed to restore my connections to the Lancaster community. The Chamber and YPN events are amazing opportunities to meet peers and community leaders, to sharpen my skills professionally, and to learn about the different companies that make our county so special. With YPN specifically, I’m able to get to know the new generation that will continue to encourage Lancaster’s growth and prosperity in the coming decades. I love the opportunity to be a part of that group.

What do you love most about your industry?

My favorite thing about my profession is that I am truly making a difference in the world, both on a small and large scale. No one wants to end up in litigation. It is an incredibly stressful and intimidating experience. While I can’t fix the inherent stress of litigation, I can be a navigator for my clients through the complex process and make sure that they have a persuasive voice advocating their positions and giving them the best chance of a successful outcome. The legal profession is a service industry, and I love helping others.

While there are naturally frustrations in an adversarial judicial system, when looking at the bigger picture, litigation is an essential piece of a process that gradually improves our nation’s law. Litigation highlights the laws that need to be changed and provokes clear interpretations of confusing statutes and standards. Slowly over time, through thousands of cases, harsh rules find exceptions and new wrongs become redressible. Each decision, case by case, refines the larger justice system as a whole. The work I do, along with all the other litigators across the nation, gradually advances our legal system to offer greater justice to future generations.

How do you like to spend your time off?

I’m a total foodie. I love trying out exotic new recipes or even just testing out Lancaster’s new restaurants. I also have two preschoolers, so I spend a lot of “free” time coloring, playing hide and seek, and winning rounds of Mario Kart.
