6 Tips & Tricks For Working From Home

Some of us are new to the work from home scene, navigating conference calls, zoom, and a more digital presence more than we ever had before. In doing so, our work style and routine may have been compromised. Here are six tips and tricks for helping you feel comfortable in this new “normal”:

CREATE YOUR SPACE – Find a space in your home, whether it’s a guest room, the basement or the corner of your apartment that you can create a space that works for you. You’ll want to make this feel like your desk at work (as best you can!). Create a desk, test your equipment, and surround yourself with things that bring you energy like your favorite mug, a container of pens & pencils or a notepad. If you are actively video calling, make sure the background isn’t distracting. Check what chair you are using, to maintain good posture. Make yourself comfortable yet attentive to be effective at your work!

MORNING ROUTINE – As much as you can maintain the morning routine of the old normal, do so without leaving your space. Wake up, shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, workout – do what you would normally do to train your body and brain that you are in work mode.

TAKE A BREAK – Create or maintain work/life balance. While some families are forced to do this (hello to the newest set of homeschool teachers), other are not that position. Be sure to step away from your space and your work. Go outside for a walk, take a drive with the windows down, do something so that you breath in fresh air! Your workflow will thank you.

KEEP WORKDAY HOURS – If your role allows, keep your workday hours intact. This helps in creating space for other things and maintains a routine for your day. Eat breakfast, “clock in”, make lunch and step away for 30 mins then “clock back in” for the afternoon. In the evening, shut down or walk away from your space and “clock out” for the night!

FIND YOUR COMMUNCIATION – Find the best ways for your to connect with you colleagues. Set a routine to check in Monday/Wednesday/Friday. If your role has changed (hand raised here!), make sure you are transparent with your team on what you are working on. Be open, transparent and flexible, this will be the best way to navigate isolation.

STAY INFORMED – The Chamber is striving to be your hub for resources – from advocacy and legislative updates at the local, state and federal levels, to professional development on topics relevant to our current situation – we’re here for you.

Above all else, find the right routine for YOU. Create new habits for your at-home workspace that makes you the best you during these trying times. Check in with yourself – am I burnt out? Do I need to make a change in what I’m currently doing so I can be present “at work” and be present with friends or family? These are all things to remember as we navigate these unchartered waters… together!
