Despite these unprecedented times, our agriculture industry have been heroes of the pandemic – continuing to work to harvest food and other commodities for our local community and the broader industry. As we have for 40+ years, the Agriculture Industry Outlook will take a moment to celebrate our local agriculture community, and in turn, provide vital information as we continue to navigate the future of the industry.


Todd Southerland is the Food & Agribusiness Industry Manager for BB&T, now Truist. Todd covers a broad spectrum of food industries, but some of his principal focuses include protein complexes, citrus processing, sugar, and foodservice distribution. Prior to joining SunTrust in 2015, Todd worked as the East Coast Manager for the Agricultural Industries Department at Wells Fargo Bank. Todd’s former experience includes having worked for the Bond & Corporate Finance Group at John Hancock Financial where he was responsible for sourcing and servicing transactions with an emphasis on direct origination of agribusiness opportunities in the Eastern United States, Canadian Maritime provinces, and Western Europe. Todd has also held positions with AIG Global Investment Group and Morgan Stanley. Todd has over 19 years of experience in corporate finance, much of that time working with food and commodity-related businesses.



Todd Southerland will be discussing the long-term prospects for the global food and agriculture industry and how this evolution may impact Pennsylvania food producers over the next decade.  Discussion topics will include: 


  • Expectations for commodity prices and volatility
  • Highlighting sectors poised for outsized growth as a result of changes in consumption patterns and structural demand
  • Anticipated changes in trade flows and evaluating long-term international trade partners
  • Addressing the near-term shift towards at-home meal consumption
  • Evaluating how consumers may bear the incremental costs associated with COVID-19
  • Labor outlook and the impact of immigration reform on labor availability
