Women in Business Book Discussion - What Works for Women at Work
by Joan C. Williams and Rachel Dempsey
facilitated by Hope Schmids, Director, Continuing Education & Workforce Development, Graduate Studies and Adult Learning, Millersville University
Four-part series - April 3, April 17 and May 1

According to Debra L. Spar of The New York Times Sunday Book Review, What Works for Women at Work “deftly combin(es) sociological research with a more casual narrative style, (and) offers unabashedly straightforward advice in a how-to primer for ambitious women.” Based on interviews with 127 successful working women and co-authored by the mother-daughter team of Joan C. Williams and Rachel Dempsey, this book offers a multi-generational perspective on the realities of today’s workplace. Williams and Dempsey have distilled decades of research into four patterns that affect working women:

  • Prove-It-Again!
  • The Tightrope
  • The Maternal Wall
  • The Tug of War

Our discussions will reference data (as presented in this book and elsewhere) and be enriched by anecdotal evidence based on our own experiences. You can expect a mix of open discussion, small group activities focused on specific themes from the book and takeaway strategies for implementation.
